Curb It: Boise City's New Trash And Recycling Program

by Aaron Catt on May 1, 2009

Curb It BoiseThis summer, Boise City is recycling their old approach to trash and recycling pick-up.  Instead of having to sort recyclables into the small blue containers, you’ll now be able to throw your plastic, paper and tin into one large wheeled container.

On a recent trip to Portland I was really impressed with their recycling system simply because there was no sorting involved.

According to my friend that I was visiting, the user participation was very high.  Indeed, the apartment complex dumpster was half full and the recycling containers were overflowing.  Other cities that have offered the no-sort recycling program saw a 40% increase in the volume of recyclable materials.

In addition to the changes, your recycling participation will be rewarded with lower monthly collection fees for both trash and recycling!

  • Residential Trash and Recycling- $13.80/mo
  • Residential Trash only- $17.80/mo

Boise City has put together a really great site that has all of the details about the program, dates and guidelines:  http://www.curbitboise.org

I’m really glad to see Boise stepping up to the plate and move out of the stone age on the recycling issues.  It will be interesting to see the impact this has on our landfills!

There are some important dates to remember and you also have some options on the sizes of containers that you can use.  Also, you’ll want to take note that the new trash carts will be the only ones that the City will pick up without an ‘Overflow’ sticker and they will no longer pick up loose bags of trash.

In addition to trash and recycling containers, you can also order a pretty cool composting container to be delivered.

So, do you think this new program will be effective?  How are you going to participate?  Leave a comment below and tell us what you think!
